Worship the Lamb

March 28, 2023

Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!
Rev 5:12

“The Lamb That Was Slain” is one of more than twenty names or titles given to Jesus in the book of Revelation. Here are a few others:

The First and the Last

The Faithful and True Witness

The Ruler of Creation

The Morning Star

The Lion of Judah

As lent draws to a close with Holy Week approaching, it is fitting to focus on Jesus the sacrificial Lamb. It is as the Lamb that Jesus triumphs, humbly laying down his life on the cross.

In this season we are commemorating that outpouring of His life which released us from captivity and elevated us to be co-heirs with Him!

How do we say thanks for such a gift! David asked this same question, by the way: “What shall I return to the Lord for all his goodness to me?” (Ps 116:12-14). His answer was, in part, gratefully receive the salvation He offers. This is, of course, what Jesus desires most, that we would appropriate the benefits of his sacrifice. But our focus verse today is demonstrating another appropriate response  – expressing  our gratitude in worship. Worship is defined as “expressions of reverence and adoration.” How will you worship the Lamb this Easter?  Each of us will no doubt find special ways to honour our Saviour corporately and personally.

Interestingly, Revelation allows us a glimpse of how Jesus is honoured in heaven for the sacrifice He made! John, the writer, was given a vision of the throne room in heaven where Jesus was being worshipped in song and speech:

They sang a new song saying:

“You are worthy to take the scroll
    and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
and with your blood you purchased for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.
You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,
and they will reign on the earth.”

Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they were saying:

“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”

Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!”
                                                                 Rev 5:9-13

Let’s take every opportunity to worship our Saviour in this most sacred time of the church year. There will be many moments to contemplate and honour the Lamb That Was Slain. Blessing and honour be to You, Lord, for ever and evermore.

Wonderful, merciful Savior
Precious Redeemer and Friend
Who would have thought that a Lamb
Could rescue the souls of men
Oh, You rescue the souls of men

… You are the One that we praise
You are the One we adore
You give the healing and grace
Our hearts always hunger for
Oh, our hearts always hunger for
